What is LiveScan fingerprinting and what is it used for?

Live scan fingerprinting is a digital method of capturing fingerprints without using ink. It’s commonly required for employment background checks, professional licenses, security clearances, and Florida state compliance checks. 

What is an ORI number and why is it important?

ORI stands for Originating Agency Identifier Number. These numbers tell the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) why you need the background check and to whom to send your results. Your ORI number ensures your fingerprints are sent to the correct state department.

What is a request for LiveScan service form and where do I get one?


It is very important to only use the LiveScan form provided by your potential employer, licensee, or service provider.

What are your most common fingerprint background check types?

The most common fingerprinting types include Level II background check, Medicaid, AHCA, DBPR, DOH, DCF, APD, and VECHS.

Do I need an appointment to get fingerprinted?

What do I need to bring with me?

A state-issued driver’s license or ID card, Social Security Number, along with your ORI number and OCA number (if fingerprinting for DCF or APD), found on your fingerprint request form.

How to prepare before my appointment?

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! Drink plenty of water 24 hrs prior. If your hands are dry, we recommend applying an oil-free moisturizing lotion several times daily for a few days prior to your appointment, as well as on the day of your visit. Please avoid excessive hand washing or using hand sanitizer, which can dry out your skin. Avoid chlorinated pools or saltwater 24 hrs prior. If a photograph is required, please ensure you are properly groomed. Headwear is not permitted in the photographs.

How much does fingerprinting cost?

Costs vary depending on your agency’s ORI number and type of background check. State-mandated FDLE fees are included in the pricing.

3. Specific Background Check Types

What background check do I need for real estate sales?

You will need a DBPR background check along with fingerprinting.

What is a VECHS background check?

A VECHS background check (Volunteer and Employee Criminal History System) is a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted on individuals working with vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, or disabled individuals.

What is a NCLEX fingerprint background check?

A NCLEX fingerprint background check is a mandatory criminal background check, typically conducted using fingerprints, for individuals applying for nursing licensure, specifically before taking the NCLEX-RN exam.

4. Results and Validity

How long are my FDLE fingerprints valid for / retained?

FDLE fingerprint results are generally valid for five years and will be retained for only 180 days.

Can I use my current FDLE fingerprints when applying to a new position?


No. Per FBI regulations, your prints cannot be shared between professions or other agencies. You are required to have separate prints for each license. Make sure to have the correct ORI number for the new license when submitting.

LiveScan Results / TCN #

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement asks that applicants wait at least 3-5 business days to receive their results.   Please be aware that Valor Investigations and Fingerprinting does not receive or review the results. 

LiveScan results are sent directly to the agency that requested the background check, not to the individual being fingerprinted. You will receive a Transaction Control Number (TCN) after your fingerprints are submitted, which you can use to track the submission status with the requesting agency.

Please ensure the information you provide (especially ORI number) is accurate!! Once it is received by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, it will be processed exactly as it was submitted and cannot be changed.
